In the AV world, which has been using digital signage technology long before anyone actually called it "digital signage," the church market (house-of-worship market) is one of the biggest segments, and has consistently been a strong market through all the ups and downs of the economy. With all the attention in recent years, in the digital signage market, to the more obvious segments like retail, transportation, etc... there has not been a lot of discussion to some of the more traditional/AV segments like the church market. So I ask the forum, what are some interesting applications of digital signage in this vital segment?

This is a very interesting question Tony and one that I have been pondering myself for some time now.  I wish had more information but I can say that we are currently putting together a marketing program targeting this segment and will let you know how it goes and what the reaction is.

It is interesting that a number of us are looking at this market as we begin 2009. Typical applications for Digital Signage in houses of worship that we have seen have been for lobby displays of events, guest speakers and other public information. The other major application is for presentations in the sanctuary. One additional twist is the use of Digital Signage to help bring events, fund raising efforts for missions and other activities to life through the use of video.

We should all be looking at this market more closely, indeed. There are over 310,000 houses of worship in the U.S. The “mega-churches–some with as much as a 5000 person capacity in their AV-laden sanctuaries–get a lot of attention, but studies show that over half of the churches surveyed have an average attendance of between 250 and 500 people. And these same studies have shown that most house of worship staff, in institutions large and small, are not aware of all the applications for which they could use new technology–digital signage or other AV technology...

Please allow me to draw you attention to this press release:

Net Display Systems

Win Major UAE Project for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs

Net Display Systems , the Eindhoven headquartered digital software company have won what is thought to be the largest digital signage roll out in The United Arab Emirates, if not in fact one of the largest non retail projects in recent times.  The PADS 3.1 Professional Platform has already been installed in 300 mosques with a further 250 mosques in the first phase of a project which will eventually total 5,000 licences. What is interesting is that PADS 3.1 Professional was chosen by both the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Abu Dhabi and local systems integrator Alpha Data to replace a previously installed Scala solution based on their IC3 platform.  Worshippers will be able to view information on all aspects of the Islamic faith mixed with specific day-to-day activities relating to their local mosque across The United Arab Emirates.  Lectures from other principal mosques will also form a part of the weekly schedule as the system is utilised to assist to help promote awareness of Islamic moderation and tolerance.

Net Display Systems Middle East, a strategic alliance between Gulf Commercial Group and Net Display Systems BV, The Netherlands managed the customisation and integration of PADS 3.1 Professional using their team of software engineers managed by Mr. Radwan El Zein and Ahmad Mohammad from their Dubai offices. Commenting on the project, Mark Leo who is responsible for NDS business development in the MENA (Middle East North Africa) region said’ this is not only a significant win for Net Display Systems and Alpha Data. Upgrading from the Scala platform to PADS 3.1 Professional yet again demonstrates the versatility and functionality of PADS 3.1 Professional.  It took teamwork, a high degree of professionalism and a lot of hard work by Radwan and Ahmad to win and implement the project in the first phase.  We are confident that the project will benefit the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to effectively communicate to worshippers across the Emirates. We have been working on this project for almost 9 months now with extensive liaison and in-market meetings between Eindhoven, Abu Dhabi and Dubai to win this large and prestige project.  It was truly a multinational team with personnel from The Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, The Sudan, The Netherlands, Palestine, Egypt, The United Arab Emirates and Ireland involved’.
